Cholesterol is fatty substance found naturally throughout your body. When our arteries are clogged with cholesterol through foods that we eat it is called as plaque.

 

It blocks the arteries making it narrow and results in decrease flow of blood to the heart. High cholesterol leads to a variety of problems that primarily includes heart diseases. One needs to identify whether he or she is at high risk group from cholesterol related problems.

 

Family history of high cholesterol


In many cases regulation of cholesterol blood levels are hereditary and related to genetics. It is advisable to identify if your relatives have high cholesterol levels.

 

Old age


Cholesterol levels spike with age, and in women it is primarily post-menopause.

 

Over weight or obese


Being over-weight increases your risk of developing heart-diseases due to high cholesterol levels.

Sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical activity


One can lower bad cholesterol levels by exercising and increasing your physical acticity in a day, this raises the good cholesterol levels (HDL). People who are not physically active are at risk for high cholesterol levels.

 

High blood pressure
High blood pressure with high cholesterol levels is a lethal combination - it greatly increases the risk of heart disease and heart attacks.

 

Smoking

 


Individuals who smoke cigarettes have a higher risk of heart disease and should avoid high cholesterol foods. Particles from cigarettes further clog the arteries, adding to your cholesterol woes.
